Born: 1874, Tokyo [Died] 1940 Go master. His real name was Tamura Yasuhisa. He started out as a student of the Hoensha school and reached the rank of 2nd dan (at the time, Hoensha was ranked 8th in the kyu system), but in 1891 he left the school and was stripped of his rank and became unranked. The following year he became a disciple of Honinbo Shuei and was allowed to reach the rank of "flying 4th dan". In 1905 he was promoted to 7th dan, but as he approached the rank of his teacher, they became estranged. After Shuei's death in February 1907, he had a dispute over the succession to the Honinbo with Karigane Junichi, who was supported by Shuei's widow Makiko. With the support of the retired Shugen (the 16th and 20th Honinbo), he reclaimed the 20th title for one year, and became the 21st Honinbo Shusai in February 1908. That autumn he reached 8th dan, and in 1914 he became a Meijin. When he joined forces with the Hoensha to found the Central Ki-in in 1908, he transferred the right to issue certificates, which was passed on to the Nihon Ki-in, which was founded the following year. In 1901, the Mainichi Shimbun (then the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun and the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun) and the Nihon Ki-in decided to abolish the hereditary system of the Honinbo family and to allow a new generation of champions to inherit the name. This was the Honinbo tournament. His retirement game in 1903 was against 7th dan Kitani Minoru, who had won the preliminary round.
