Japanese: コウモリ(蝙蝠) - コウモリ（英語表記）bat

A general term for mammals belonging to the order Chiroptera. They are also called cockroaches or river bats. They are the only flying mammals and are found in a wide range of habitats, foods, and sizes. They are second only to the order Rodentia in terms of the number of species, with about 1,000 species in 18 families and two suborders. The smallest species is the long-eared bat, a member of the family Pteropidae, discovered in southern Thailand in 1974, with a wingspan of 16 cm, body length of 3 cm, and weight of less than 2 g. The largest species is the Javan flying fox, a member of the family Pteropodidae, with a wingspan of 170 cm, body length of 40 cm, and weight of 900 g.

翼手目Chiropteraに属する哺乳類の総称。カクイドリ，カワホリともいう。飛翔（ひしよう）する唯一の哺乳類で，北極と南極を除く世界の亜寒帯から熱帯まで広く分布する。そのすみか，食物および大きさはきわめて変化に富む。種数は齧歯（げつし）目に次いで多く，2亜目18科約1000種がある。最小種は1974年タイ南部で発見されたブタバナコウモリ科のブタバナコウモリで，翼開張16cm，体長3cm，体重2g以下，最大種はオオコウモリ科のジャワオオコウモリで，翼開張170cm，体長40cm，体重900gに達する。
