An indigenous tribe in the state of Mato Grosso in western Brazil. Once a powerful tribe, they are now divided into three groups, and their total population has drastically decreased to about 900 (1994). They speak Bororo, which is close to Ge. Their occupations are slash-and-burn cultivation, hunting, fishing, and gathering, but slash-and-burn cultivation is the most important as game and fish for hunting have decreased. The village is large and circular, consisting of a central square surrounded by a ring of houses. The village is divided into two parts, north and south, by an exogamous matrilineal half-tribe, each of which is further divided into four exogamous matrilineal clans.
