Bonin Grosbeak (English name: Carpodacus ferreorostris)

Passerine, Fringillidae. Total length 18-19cm. A species endemic to Chichijima, probably only in the Ogasawara Islands, it became extinct after being collected in 1827-28. At least 10 specimens collected at that time are kept in museums in Europe and the United States, but none are in Japan. Considering the size of its head, it has a very thick and large beak. Sexes are different. Males are olive brown on the back and light brown or dull white on the underside, with a reddish tinge all over the body, especially the head. Females are olive brown without the reddish tinge. Both sexes have indistinct vertical stripes on their backs. They often inhabit coastal forests, and are said to have mainly fed on the ground.
