A city in the western part of Shimane Prefecture, occupying the lower reaches of the Takatsu River and the surrounding mountainous areas. It was incorporated as a city in 1952. It is centered around Masuda, the former castle town of the Masuda clan, Yoshida, the junction of the San'in Main Line and the Yamaguchi Line, and Takatsu, which developed as a town in front of the shrine gates of Kakimoto Shrine. Masuda, along with Hamada and Ota, is known as the Sanda of Iwami and is the center of the western Iwami region. It also collects and distributes timber, and is a dairy farm, and cultivates grapes and melons. It is home to the Manpuku-ji Garden and Iko-ji Garden, both designed by Sesshu (both are historic sites and scenic spots). Iwami Airport opened in the west in March 1993. The Hikimi Gorge in the eastern part of the city, near the border with Hiroshima Prefecture, is part of the West Chugoku Mountains Quasi-National Park. In November 2004, the towns of Mito and Hikimi in Mino County were incorporated. Area: 733.19 ^km2 . Population: 50,150 (2010).

島根県西部，高津川下流域と周辺山地を占める市。1952年市制。益田氏の旧城下町益田，山陰本線と山口線の分岐点吉田，柿本神社の鳥居前町として発達した高津が中心で，益田は浜田，大田とともに石見(いわみ)の三田といわれ石見地方西部の中心。木材を集散，酪農，ブドウ，メロン栽培も行う。雪舟作庭の万福寺庭園，医光寺庭園（いずれも史跡・名勝）がある。1993年３月石見空港が西部に開港した。広島県境に近い東部の匹見峡などは西中国山地国定公園の一部。2004年11月美濃郡美都町，匹見町を編入。733.19km²。５万15人（2010）。
