A city in the western part of Shimane Prefecture, occupying the lower reaches of the Takatsu River and the surrounding mountainous areas. It was incorporated as a city in 1952. It also collects and distributes timber, and is a dairy farm, and cultivates grapes and melons. The Hikimi Gorge in the eastern part of the city, near the border with Hiroshima Prefecture, is part of the West Chugoku Mountains Quasi-National Park. In November 2004, the towns of Mito and Hikimi in Mino County were incorporated. Area: 733.19 km2 .
