Waitz, Georg
Born: October 9, 1813, Flensburg
Died May 24, 1886. German historian from Berlin. A student of L. Ranke, he specialized in medieval legal history. In 1842 he became a professor at the University of Kiel. He participated in the Schleswig-Holstein national movement and was elected to the Frankfurt National Assembly, but was driven out of Kiel due to his political activities and became a professor at the University of Göttingen from 1849 to 1875. In 1875 he became a professor at the University of Berlin and at the same time became the editor-in-chief of Monumenta Germaniae Historica, devoting the rest of his life to compiling and organizing medieval historical materials. In addition to historical writings such as Deutsche Verfassungsgeschichte (8 volumes, 1844-1878), he also revised F. Dahlmann's Quellenkunde zur deutschen Geschichte (69), which has been expanded and is still widely used today under the title Dahlmann-Weiz.

German ethnologist and philosopher. In 1862 he became a professor at the University of Marburg. Influenced by J. F. Herbart, he studied the spiritual life of various ethnic groups and emphasized the historical consideration of ethnic culture. His main work was Anthropologie der Naturvölker (Anthropology of Natural Peoples) (6 volumes, 1859-72).
