The place where the family name originated. The four clans with family names such as the Genpei-Tachibana clan, known as the "Four Family Names," the Genji, Taira, Fujiwara, and Tachibana, used the place name of their base as a family name to distinguish between the clans as they branched off into branches. The place of the family name can be a land developed by the ancestors or a land of the family to which they migrated. 名字発生の地。〈四姓(しせい)〉といわれる源氏・平氏・藤原氏・橘氏のいわゆる〈源平藤橘(げんぺいとうきつ)〉などの姓をもつ氏族が，庶流（支族）を分出する過程でその本拠となる地名を名字とし，その氏族間を区別した。名字の地となるのは，先祖からの開発地の場合や，移住先の根本所領の場合などがある。たとえば相模国の三浦半島を領有した平姓(へいせい)三浦氏一族の場合，惣領(そうりょう)は三浦氏を称し，その支族は本拠地の津久井(つくい)・芦名(あしな)・長井（いずれも現神奈川県横須賀市），和田（現同県三浦市）などの地名をとり，津久井氏・蘆名(あしな)氏・長井氏・和田氏などを名乗った。→苗字
