...The Edo Shogunate carried out several river diversion works since the early modern period to redirect the Tone River to the east and make it flow into the Pacific Ocean. The first was in 1621 (Genwa 7), when they excavated the Shinkawa-dori and Akabori River to merge the Tone River with the Watarase River and divert it into the Hitachi River, but failed to make the Akabori River flow. In 1635 (Kan'ei 12), they started excavating the current Edo River upstream, and diverted the Tone River and Watarase River to the east north of Gongendo in Satte City, Saitama Prefecture, and connected them to the head of this river (Gongendo River), and excavated the Sakasa River to the north from that junction to connect it to the upstream of the Hitachi River north of Sekijuku in Shimousa Province. *Some of the terminology that refers to "Akahori River" is listed below.
