Heinrich Wittenweiler

A Swiss poet of the late Middle Ages. Also known as Wittenwiler. He is thought to have been a lawyer, but his biography is unknown. His German epic poem Der Ring (c. 1400) is a parody of courtly epics, a satirical moral poem, depicting a grotesque incident surrounding a peasant marriage, with a mixture of seriousness and humor. The author likens the story to a jewel-studded ring, and as an encyclopedia of worldly wisdom, it provides a wealth of valuable material for learning about the customs and feelings of the common people in the late Middle Ages.

中世後期のスイスの詩人。ウィッテンウィーラーWittenwilerともよばれる。法律家であったらしいが，伝記は不詳。ドイツ語の長編叙事詩《指輪》(1400ころ)は農民の結婚をめぐって起こるグロテスクな事件を，本気と諧謔をないまぜにして描いた，宮廷叙事詩のパロディで，風刺のきいた教訓詩である。作者が宝石をちりばめた指輪にたとえたこの物語は，いわば処世智を満載した百科全書として，中世末期の庶民の慣習や生活感情を知るうえの貴重な資料を豊富に提供している。
