In ancient times, documents recorded the origins of clans, their duties, and the achievements of their ancestors. Similar documents include grave inscriptions and official family registers. After the establishment of the Nihon Shoki, from the latter half of the Nara period to the early Heian period, the Imperial Court requested the submission of genealogies from various clans, and attempted to compile works such as the Shizokushi, and various clans submitted clan records to assert their own positions. This project bore fruit in 815 (Kōnin 6) as the Shinsen Shojiroku. The only surviving historical material under the name of clan record is the Takahashi clan record, which remains as a fragmented document in various books. It was submitted to the Imperial Court by the Takahashi clan (Kashiwade clan), who served the Naizenshi, in a dispute with the Azumi clan, in which they recorded the origins of their family. In addition, the Kogoshui, in which the Inbe (Imbe) clan criticized the Nakatomi clan and asserted their own position, contains ancient traditions that differ from those in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. Other surviving documents include the Nakatomi clan Engikihon genealogy, the Tame clan genealogy, and the Kamo no Agata-nushi genealogy.
