An Iranian port city on the Persian Gulf coast. Population: 384,000 (1994). In the Middle Ages, the island of Hormuz on the northwest coast was more prosperous, but in the first half of the 16th century, it became a trading post after the Portuguese arrived. In 1622, Shah Abbas I of the Safavid dynasty occupied it, and it became Iran's main trading port. In the first half of the 18th century, Nadir Shah moved his naval base from here to Bushehr, and the Dutch and British East India Companies closed their trading posts and the city fell into disrepair, but today it has developed into a port city surpassing Bushehr.
