Oirase River

Japanese:
Oirase River

A river that flows through eastern Aomori Prefecture. It is 67 kilometers long. It flows out from Nenokuchi on the eastern shore of Lake Towada, flows north and east, and empties into the Pacific Ocean in Oirase Town, Kamikita District. The 14 kilometers from Nenokuchi to Yakeyama, where it joins the Tsuta River, are called the Oirase Stream, and are an important part of Towada-Hachimantai National Park. In the valley, you can see riverside forests of horse chestnut, Japanese walnut, and katsura trees, and as you move away from the stream, you will see a mixture of beech forest species such as beech, magnolia, and Japanese chromosome. On the sandbanks of the riverside that are strongly influenced by the flowing water and at the confluence, keyama alder forests, dow forests, and Onoe willow forests have developed. The stream has a variety of flows, including waterfalls along the way, and is particularly spectacular in the seasons of new greenery and autumn leaves. Tourist buses run along the route, and there is also a walking trail. From Yakeyama, the river flows eastward, carving out the Sanbongi Plateau. In 1855 (Ansei 2), a samurai of the Nanbu clan, Nitobe Tsuto (Inazo's grandfather), began developing the barren land of Sanbongihara. After difficult construction, he succeeded in drawing water from the Oirase River into the river in 1859, which marked the start of rice paddy development on the plateau.
