A group of succulents from the Vitis family that are found mainly in South Africa are collectively known in ornamental horticulture as Mesembryanthema, or Mesembryanthemum for short. Linnaeus once treated them as a single genus, Mesembryanthemum , but in the 20th century, L. Bolus of the University of Cape Town and NE Brown of the Botanical Gardens, Kew, among others, subdivided them into as many as 120 genera. With over 2,000 species, they are a large group of succulents on a par with cacti, but unlike cacti, they have a different tendency to become fleshy, with fleshy leaves.
