A general term for birds of the passerine order, family Nectariniidae. This family is widely distributed in the tropics and subtropics of the Old World and the Southern Hemisphere, mainly in Africa and South Asia, and is classified into 5 to 8 genera and about 106 species. Overall length is 9 to 22 cm. Most species are small birds the size of a sparrow or smaller (illustration), and males have metallic red, green, blue, purple, or black feathers, and their beauty rivals that of New World hummingbirds. The name sunbird comes from this beauty. However, females are generally olive green in color, and some males also become dull in color during the non-breeding season.
