1792‐1871 English applied mathematician. Known as the inventor of the calculating machine. Born into a wealthy family, he was educated at home and then studied at Cambridge University, where he became a professor in 1827. He advocated innovation in mathematics education and argued that societies were necessary to advance research. Babbage attacked the old ways of the Royal Society and helped to found the Astronomical Society, the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and the London Statistical Society.
