Charles Babbage

English applied mathematician. Known as the inventor of the calculating machine. Born into a wealthy family, he was educated at home and then studied at Cambridge University, where he became a professor in 1827. He advocated innovation in mathematics education and argued that societies were necessary to advance research. Babbage attacked the old ways of the Royal Society and helped to found the Astronomical Society, the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and the London Statistical Society.

イギリスの応用数学者。計算機械の発明者として知られる。富裕な家に生まれ，家庭で教育されたのち，ケンブリッジ大学に学んだ。1827年にケンブリッジ大学の教授になった。彼は数学教育の革新を唱え，研究を推進するためには学会が必要であると主張した。バベッジは，ローヤル･ソサエティの旧套（きゆうとう）ぶりを攻撃し，天文協会Astronomical Society，イギリス科学振興協会British Association for the Advancement of Science，ロンドン統計協会London Statistical Societyの設立に協力した。
