Volborthella

A fossil considered to be a primitive cephalopod that was widespread worldwide in the Early Cambrian. There is some debate about its taxonomic position as either a separate order within the Cephalopoda or a separate class between the extinct class Calyptomatida and the Cephalopoda within the phylum Mollusca. It has a tiny, cone-shaped shell, about 5 mm long. The shell is thought to be made of a calcareous material that contains organic matter. A central tube runs through the shell, surrounded by an inverted cone-shaped septum. There is also a bulging area that corresponds to the living chamber.

カンブリア紀前期に広く世界的に分布した原始的な頭足類とみなされる化石。この分類学上の位置については，頭足綱中の独立目とするか，軟体動物門中の絶滅綱であるCalyptomatidaと頭足綱の間の独立綱とするかどうかの議論がある。微小な直錐形の殻をもち，長さ約5mm。殻は有機質を含む石灰質の物質からなると考えられている。殻内には中央管が通り，それを囲んで倒錐状の隔壁が発達する。また住房にあたるふくらんだ部分もある。
