Cloth mask - Fusakumen

Japanese: 布作面 - ふさくめん

There are 32 masks preserved in the Shosoin Repository. These are simple square linen masks with roughly drawn ink lines of a person's face, with eyes cut out and strings attached. It is known from documents in the Shosoin Repository that they were used in the Tang Dynasty, but their specific use and relationship to Gigaku masks are not yet clear. With the exception of one female mask, all the masks are male, characterized by exotic, bearded, Hu-style facial features, and their skilled, powerful ink lines make them valuable as paintings from the Nara period.

正倉院に 32面伝存する，四角い麻布にあらい墨描線で人物の顔面を描いて目をくり抜き，くくり紐をつけた簡略な仮面。唐中楽に用いられたことが正倉院文書より知られるが，具体的な使用法や伎楽面との関係はまだ明らかではない。女性面が1面あるほかはすべて男性面で，ひげを生やした胡人風のエキゾチックな顔立ちに特色があり，その熟達した力強い墨線描は奈良時代絵画資料として貴重である。
