… These people gathered around the stupas scattered throughout India, worshipped the Buddha, and had fervent faith in him. They regarded the Buddha's name in his previous life, bodhisattva (one who seeks enlightenment), as the ideal human figure, and called anyone who was committed to this movement, regardless of age or gender, bodhisattva.
