A major German coal company based in the Ruhr coalfield. It is also the holding company for a corporate group of 83 companies. It is also known as the Ruhr Coal Company. Its headquarters are in Essen. It was established in 1968 with the cooperation of the former West German federal government, by merging 19 mining companies in the Ruhr coalfield, which was in a recession at the time. Since 1970, it has expanded its business scale by absorbing many mines and power plants. It currently sells 41.6 million tons of coal per year.
