Kolbe-Schmitt reaction

Japanese: コルベ=シュミット反応 - コルベシュミットはんのう(英語表記)Kolbe‐Schmitt reaction
Kolbe-Schmitt reaction
Also known simply as the Kolbe reaction, this reaction synthesizes aromatic hydroxy acids through the carboxylation of phenols. In 1860, AWH Kolbe of Germany melted the sodium salt of phenol (sodium phenoxide) at 180-200°C and blew carbon dioxide into it to obtain salicylic acid. In 1885, R. Schmitt improved on this reaction, finding that salicylic acid could be produced in good yields by passing carbon dioxide through it at 120-140°C under pressure.
