Also known simply as the Kolbe reaction, this reaction synthesizes aromatic hydroxy acids through the carboxylation of phenols. In 1860, AWH Kolbe of Germany melted the sodium salt of phenol (sodium phenoxide) at 180-200°C and blew carbon dioxide into it to obtain salicylic acid. In 1885, R. Schmitt improved on this reaction, finding that salicylic acid could be produced in good yields by passing carbon dioxide through it at 120-140°C under pressure. 単にコルベ反応ともいう。フェノール類のカルボキシル化反応によって芳香族ヒドロキシ酸を合成する反応。1860年ドイツのA.W.H.コルベはフェノールのナトリウム塩(ナトリウムフェノキシド)を180~200℃で溶融し,これに二酸化炭素を吹き込んでサリチル酸を得たが,85年,シュミットR.Schmittがこの反応を改良し,加圧下に120~140℃で二酸化炭素を通ずれば好収率でサリチル酸が生成することを見いだした。
