British composer. Born in Cheltenham, west of England, to a Swedish family. He studied at the Royal College of Music in London, where he became acquainted with Vaughan Williams. From 1906 he served as head of music at St. Paul's Girls' School (in the suburbs of London) for the rest of his life. He was interested in Eastern philosophy, and produced many excellent orchestral works, including the chamber opera Servitri (1908, premiered in 1916), based on the ancient Indian epic poem Mahabharata, Oriental Suite (1910), Japanese Suite (1915), and the internationally acclaimed suite The Planets (1916). He also produced many excellent choral works, including the Jesus Hymn (1917). His Suite for Wind Orchestra Nos. 1 and 2 (1909, 1911) are also famous masterpieces in this field. His daughter Imogen (1907-1984) was also known as a conductor and writer, and was active in the Aldeburgh Festival, which was organized by Britten, among other events. She also wrote about her father, Britten, Bird, and Purcell.

英国の作曲家。イングランド西部チェルトナムでスウェーデン人の家系に生まれる。ロンドンの王立音楽学校に学び，ボーン・ウィリアムズと知り合う。1906年以降生涯にわたりセント・ポール女学校（ロンドン郊外）で音楽主任を務めた。東洋哲学に関心を抱き，インドの古代叙事詩《マハーバーラタ》を題材にした室内オペラ《サービトリー》（1908年，初演1916年），《東洋組曲》（1910年），《日本組曲》（1915年），国際的な評価を得た組曲《惑星》（1916年）などの管弦楽曲のほか，《イエス賛歌》（1917年）をはじめとする合唱曲にも秀作を数多く残した。《吹奏楽のための組曲》第１・２番（1909年，1911年）もこの分野では名高い名曲。娘のイモジェン〔1907-1984〕も指揮者，著述家として知られ，ブリテン主催の〈オールドバラ音楽祭〉などで活動。父やブリテン，またバードやパーセルについての著作を残した。
