[died]August 9, 2015. Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. A theorist who pioneered the field of "complex adaptive systems," systems made of adaptive components that enable collective behavior. He also systematized genetic algorithms (→ evolutionary computation) and learning classifier systems. He received his BS in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1950, his MA in Mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1954, and his PhD in 1959, contributing greatly to the development of computer science as an academic field. Holland's mathematical techniques have helped solve problems in many fields, including economics, biology, and computer science. His genetic algorithms allowed computer programs to mimic and analyze the evolution of living organisms, and his classifier systems enabled inductive learning. In his seminal work Adaptation in Natural and Artificial Systems (1975), he showed that complex societies and bodies are not the product of abstract rules, but are the result of various agents and their interactions.

[Died] June 17, 1806, Chelsea. British architect. Educated by his father, a builder, he became an apprentice to the landscape gardener L. Brown in 1771 and was in charge of design in the architectural department. After Brooks Club (1776-78), he worked on the expansion and renovation of Carlton House (1783-95), the London residence of the Prince of Wales. In 1786-87, he designed the Sea Pavilion in Brighton (later converted into the Royal Pavilion by J. Nash). He also engaged in speculative townhouse construction, planning the Hans Townhouses (1871, Chelsea), among others. He excelled in an elegant and restrained style that combined French neoclassicism with the styles of W. Chambers and R. Adam. His office produced such masters as J. Soane.

Died: August 12, 1914. Newark, New Jersey. Irish-born American inventor. He received his primary education in Limerick. He wanted to be a sailor, but due to poor eyesight, he became a school teacher. In 1873, he went to America, where he taught in Paterson, New Jersey, until 1879. In 1879, he received funding from the Irish Fenians and built a small submarine, which he successfully operated underwater. In 1895, he established a company. Although his first boat was a failure, his second, the Holland, passed tests and was officially adopted by the US Navy in 1900. He subsequently received orders from Britain, Japan, and Russia. This submarine was powered by an internal combustion engine at sea and operated by an electric motor while submerged, and can be considered the prototype of modern submarines.

A port city on Lake Macatawa, an inlet of Lake Michigan, in the western part of Michigan, USA. It is located 40 km southwest of Grand Rapids. Founded in 1847 by Dutch settlers, lumber and leather processing were the main industries in the city at first. Today, agriculture, mainly fruit farming and poultry farming, and various other industries are carried out. During the Tulip Festival every May, the streets and parks are decorated with tulips, and a parade in Dutch national costumes and wooden shoe dancing are held. Holland State Park is located nearby. Population 30,745 (1990).

Died: February 9, 1637, Coventry. British classical scholar. After graduating from Cambridge University, he studied medicine at Oxford University and settled in Coventry. He is best known for his translations of the classics, and was called the "boss of translations." His translations include Pliny the Elder's Natural History (1601), Plutarch's Ethics (03), W. Camden's local chronicle Britannia (10), and Xenophon's Education of Cyrus (32).

Born July 24, 1819 in Belchertown, Massachusetts.
[Died] October 12, 1881. New York, USA. Journalist. Pen name Timothy Titcomb. After editing the Springfield Republican, he founded Scribner's Monthly (1870) and served as its editor until his death. His sentimental and moralistic novels and poems were well received at the time.

アイルランド生れのアメリカの発明家。リマリックで初等教育を受けた。船乗りになりたかったが，視力不足のため学校教師となり，1873年アメリカに渡り，79年までニュージャージー州パターソンで教師をつとめた。 79年アイルランドのフェニアン団から資金を得て，小潜水艇を建造，潜水運転に成功。 95年会社を設立，最初の艇は失敗であったが，2番目の『ホランド』号はテストを通り，1900年アメリカ海軍に正式採用された。その後も，イギリス，日本，ロシアから注文を受けた。これは，海上では内燃機関で運航し，潜水中は電動機で操縦するもので，現代の潜水艦の原型といえる。
