Japan Theatre Association

An organization whose objectives are to improve the theatrical world and benefit theater people. The first was proposed in 1943 (Showa 18) by Kubota Mantaro and Takada Tamotsu, and was launched with Mayama Seika and then Mushanokoji Saneatsu as presidents, and Kubota as director, but it was dissolved in 1946. The second was reorganized in 1951 (Showa 26), when the Playwrights Guild was reorganized and a criticism section, radio section, theater company management, and production section were added. The chairman was Kubota Mantaro, and the managing director was Hojo Hideji. Following Kubota's death in 1988, Hojo became chairman the following year. The organization has been involved in campaigns to reduce admission taxes, set script fees for performances and broadcasts, and copyright issues, and has been publishing the Theater Yearbook since 1966. Since 1988, it has opened a "playwriting school" to train new playwrights. In 1993, the chairman, Hojo, resigned due to poor health. Toshio Kawatake was elected chairman. As of April 2001, the number of members is 310.

演劇界の向上と演劇人の利益を目的とした団体。第一次は、1943年（昭和18）久保田万太郎と高田保(たもつ)が提唱、真山青果(まやませいか)、ついで武者小路実篤(むしゃのこうじさねあつ)を会長、久保田を理事長として発足させたが46年に解散した。第二次は51年（昭和26）劇作家組合を改組し、評論部、ラジオ部、劇団経営、制作者部門等を加えて再建された。会長久保田万太郎、専務理事北条秀司(ひでじ)。63年久保田の死に伴い、翌年北条が会長に就任。入場税の減免運動、上演・放映脚本料の規定、著作権問題などに取り組み、66年以来、『演劇年鑑』の刊行も続けている。88年以来、新人劇作家養成のための「劇作塾」を開講。1993年（平成5）、会長の北条が体調不調で辞任。河竹登志夫が会長に選任された。2001年4月現在の会員数310名。
