Born: January 6, 1861, Ghent Died: September 11, 1947, Brussels. Belgian architect and founder of Art Nouveau architecture. After studying interior decoration in Paris, he trained in architecture in Brussels. In 1893, he used a lot of steel in the Tassel House in Brussels, creating an original asymmetrical curved style inside, which became the first Art Nouveau building in architecture. He then built the Solvay House (1895-1900) and the House of the People (1896-99) in a similar curved style, but in the 20th century, he gradually changed his style to a more classical one. His later masterpieces include the Grand Bazaar department store in Frankfurt (1903), the Palais des Beaux-Arts (1922-28), and the Brussels Central Station (1937-52). In 2000, four mansions in Brussels, including the Solvay House, were registered as cultural heritage of the World Heritage Sites. Alter |
