When looking at the vertical distribution of temperature, it generally shows a decrease in temperature the higher it gets, but when warm air overlaps with cold air, a temperature inversion occurs. The atmospheric layer where the temperature is inverted is called a temperature inversion layer. Temperature inversions occur at frontal surfaces and in the stratosphere. Also, near the ground, the temperature drops the closer to the ground due to radiative cooling that occurs at night on clear days, creating a temperature inversion layer. This is called a surface inversion layer, and it begins after sunset and is most noticeable in the early morning. After sunrise, it weakens as the turbulence increases, and usually resolves after a few hours. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
