(1) A German oceanographic research vessel built in 1915 with a displacement of 1,150 tons and a crew of 114 and 10 scientists. It was a converted warship belonging to the Hydrographic Department of the former German Navy. It was fitted with the latest equipment and oceanographic instruments of the time, and under Captain Spiess and Captain Mertz (later replaced by Defant), it conducted the Great South Atlantic Ocean Expedition (1925-1927). The results of the observations were compiled into 16 volumes, edited by Defant as chief editor, and published as the Meteor Report, which was completed in 1963 after a hiatus during World War II. The book is regarded as a classic in oceanography. (2) An oceanographic research vessel of the Federal Republic of Germany that inherited the name of the former. Built in 1964. Displacement 2,615 tons, length 82 meters, width 13.5 meters, crew of 55, and 10 scientists. Equipped with the latest oceanographic and marine meteorological observation equipment and 10 laboratories, it belongs to the German Hydrographic Institute in Hamburg.
