Dazai Osamu's first collection of creative writing. Published by Sunagoya Shobo in June 1936 (Showa 11). It contains 15 short stories using a variety of techniques, with the theme of the struggles of survival of a young man in an age of ideological confusion. "Leaf" is a spiritual autobiography that is a collection of fragments of practice pieces. "Memories" is an autobiographical novel. "Gyofuku-ki", "Chikyu-zu" and "Sarugashima" are fine works that use the traditional short story technique. "Clown's Flower" is an experimental novel that uses the experience of a double suicide as its material, but in which a "person" who is neither a character nor the author confesses his confusion about the meaning and method of creation. "Reverse Cycle" is a series of short stories, and was nominated for the first Akutagawa Prize.
