A village in Higashichikuma County, central Nagano Prefecture. Population 1,724 (1995). A mountain village surrounded by Mt. Azumaya, Mt. Obayashi, and Mt. Kamuriki in the Chikuma Mountains, with settlements scattered along the main tributary of the Omi River, a tributary of the Sai River. Agriculture is the main industry, but in recent years, sericulture has declined significantly due to an increase in part-time farmers, and cultivation of enoki mushrooms and shiitake mushrooms has increased. Pig farming and dairy farming have also become popular due to the creation of a livestock complex. There are factories producing electrical parts and automobile parts, and the Omi Interchange on the Nagano Expressway is located near the northern edge, so many people commute to Matsumoto City and Nagano City using the JR Shinonoi Line and other lines.
