Born: February 24, 1836 in Boston Died: September 29, 1910. American painter from Bruce Neck. In 1859, he attended night classes at the Brooklyn Drawing School in New York, where he studied oil painting under French painter F. Rondelle. During the Civil War, he created illustrations for Harper's Weekly and oil paintings on the theme of war. He visited France in 1866 and 1867, and stayed in England from 1881 to 1882. He settled on the coast of Maine in 1883, and visited Florida and the West Indies, where he painted watercolors. His major works include Hunters and Dogs (1891, Philadelphia Museum of Art) and Storm in the Straits (1899, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York), among others.
