1892‐1948 German geographer. Born in Greifswald as the son of geologist and geographer Rudolf. Initially aimed to study mining, but after the end of World War I he studied geography at the University of Greifswald and the University of Uppsala in Sweden, and then at the University of Heidelberg under A. Hettner. In 1924 he went on a research trip to Sweden, and published Landscape and Economy in Sweden (1925). From 1927 to 1931 he made research trips to Indochina and southern China. In 1931 he became a professor at the Nuremberg School of Business, and in 1932 he became a professor at the Technical University of Munich, where he continued his work.
