Born: March 23, 1837
A French engineer who came to Japan in the late Edo and Meiji periods. Born in Reims, France. Arrived in Japan around 1864. In Yokohama, he ran a military supplies business, a butcher shop, a ship water supply business, and a brick manufacturing business. In particular, the bricks and tiles manufactured at the brick and tile manufacturing factory he established in 1875 bear a large stamp bearing his name, and are known as Gerard bricks and tiles. <References> Nakatake Kanami, "Gerard's Birth and Death Certificates" (Open Port Plaza)

幕末明治期に来日したフランス人技術者。フランスのランス市生まれ。元治1(1864)年ごろ来日。横浜で軍用日用品供給業,肉屋,船舶給水業,煉瓦製造業を営む。特に明治8(1875)年に設立した煉瓦・瓦製造工場で製造された煉瓦・瓦には,彼の名を示す大きな刻印が打たれており,ジェラール煉瓦・瓦と呼ばれる。<参考文献>中武香奈美「ジェラールの出生・死亡証明書」(『開港のひろば』)
