The writing system used by the Aramaeans in ancient Western Asia It is an alphabet consisting of 22 consonants, which spread along with Aramaic, and in the second half of the 1st millennium BC it was used throughout Southwest Asia, replacing cuneiform script, and vowel symbols were also created. After Hellenism it spread further eastward, becoming the basis for the Turkic and Sogdian scripts, which then led to the Uighur and Mongolian and Manchu scripts. The Arabic script also emerged in West Asia from this lineage. Source: Obunsha World History Dictionary, Third Edition About Obunsha World History Dictionary, Third Edition |
