Guadeloupe - Guadeloupe (English spelling)

A French overseas department in the eastern Caribbean Sea. It is located in the southern part of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles. It consists of two main islands, Basse-Terre in the west and Grande-Terre in the east (the two islands are connected by a bridge), as well as Marie-Galante and Saintes in the south. It has a total area of 1,705 square kilometers and a total population of 422,496 (1999). Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre are sometimes collectively called Guadeloupe. Basse-Terre is a volcanic island, and the Soufrière volcano there suddenly erupted in 1976. Basse-Terre on the same island is the capital of Guadeloupe, with a population of 12,410 (1999). Grande-Terre is a coral island. Its main products are sugar, bananas, coffee, cocoa, and rum. In 1635, the French settled there, driving out the indigenous Carib people, but after a dispute with Britain over ownership, it became a French territory in 1815, and was promoted to a French overseas department in 1946.
