Weak bosons are one of the gauge bosons that mediate fundamental forces such as photons, and are elementary particles that mediate the weak interaction of the four forces. They were discovered through experiments by Italian physicist Carlo Rubbia and Dutch physicist Simon van der Meer, who were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1984. There are W bosons, which carry an electric charge, and Z bosons, which carry no electric charge. Both have large masses, with W bosons being about 85 times that of a proton and Z bosons being about 95 times that of a proton. One of the goals of the International Linear Collider (ILC) project is to generate pairs of weak bosons, precisely investigate the forces acting between them, and precisely verify the Standard Model of elementary particles.
