The capital of Guam Island, facing Agana Bay on the west coast of Guam Island, a U.S. territory in the Western Pacific Ocean. Population: 1,100 (1990). Originally a village established by the Chamorro people, the 17th century Spanish missionary San Vitores records that there were 50 large houses and 150 small houses here. The two were socially separated, with the latter inhabited by people of lower status. The island was occupied by the Japanese army for three years from 1941, but the town was completely destroyed by fighting between the Japanese and U.S. armies during that time and by typhoons after the war.
