Japanese: ヨナグニサン(与那国蚕) - ヨナグニサン（英語表記）atlas moth

An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Saturniidae (illustration). Wing span is about 18cm for males and about 20cm for females. Although Saturniidae moths are generally large, this species is the largest in Japan and is one of the moths with the widest wing area in the world. The wings are reddish brown, with large triangular transparent markings on both the forewings and hindwings, surrounded by black bands. The tip of the forewing protrudes like a sickle, with a black marking near the front edge of that part and a red stripe below. The shape and markings of this sickle-shaped part are reminiscent of the head of a snake.

鱗翅目ヤママユガ科の昆虫（イラスト）。翅の開張，雄は18cm内外，雌は20cm内外。ヤママユガ科は一般に大型だが，本種は日本産の最大種であるとともに，世界でも翅の面積のもっとも広いガの一つである。翅は赤褐色，前･後翅とも大きな三角形の透明紋があり，周囲を黒帯でかこまれている。前翅頂は鎌状に突出し，その部分の前縁近くに黒紋があり，下のほうには赤色条がある。この鎌状部の形と斑紋は，ヘビの頭部を連想させる。
