Datum is the singular form of data, and also refers to a reference surface (line, point) in surveying, or a reference used to determine position. In machinery, it takes on this latter meaning, and when indicating the attitude tolerance or position tolerance of a related feature on a drawing, a datum is a theoretically accurate, ideal geometric reference set to regulate the tolerance range. When the reference is a point, line, or plane, it is called a datum point, datum line, or datum plane, respectively. In an actual machined mechanical part, this is a feature that realizes a datum, so it is called a datum feature. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
