Saint. She is called "Elisabeth of Thuringia" or "Elisabeth of Hungary." Daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary, she married Louis IV, Landgrave of Thuringia, in 1221, and was a member of the high nobility throughout Europe through birth and marriage. After her husband's death in 1227, she founded a semi-monastery-like lay nursing society for the sick in Marburg, and dedicated her life to serving the poor and sick. Her ascetic life showed that the ruling class could also be aristocratic in a spiritual sense, and she became the patron saint of many groups.

聖女。〈チューリンゲンのエリーザベト〉あるいは〈ハンガリーのエリーザベト〉と呼ぶ。ハンガリー王アンドラーシュ2世の娘で，1221年にチューリンゲンThüringen方伯ルートウィヒ4世と結婚し，出生と婚姻を通して全ヨーロッパにまたがる高位貴族の一員であった。27年に夫が死ぬとマールブルクで半ば修道院のような，俗人の病者看護団体をつくり，貧者，病者のために生涯を捧げた。彼女の禁欲的な生涯は，支配階層が霊的な意味でも貴族でありうる可能性を示し，多くの団体の守護の聖人とされた。
