1207‐31 Saint. She is called "Elisabeth of Thuringia" or "Elisabeth of Hungary." Daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary, she married Louis IV, Landgrave of Thuringia, in 1221, and was a member of the high nobility throughout Europe through birth and marriage. After her husband's death in 1227, she founded a semi-monastery-like lay nursing society for the sick in Marburg, and dedicated her life to serving the poor and sick. Her ascetic life showed that the ruling class could also be aristocratic in a spiritual sense, and she became the patron saint of many groups.
