He was one of the founders of the Roman Republic in the 6th and 5th centuries BCE. According to legend, he expelled King Tarquinius Superbus in 509 BCE and became the first consul together with Junius Brutus. He is also said to have established the right of appeal for citizens, increased the number of senators, and established the position of quaestor, but this is not true.
