He was one of the founders of the Roman Republic in the 6th and 5th centuries BCE. According to legend, he expelled King Tarquinius Superbus in 509 BCE and became the first consul together with Junius Brutus. He is also said to have established the right of appeal for citizens, increased the number of senators, and established the position of quaestor, but this is not true.

前6～5世紀のローマ共和政設立者の一人。伝承では前 509年タルクイニウス・スペルブス王を追放し，ユニウス・ブルーツスとともに初代執政官 (コンスル ) となったとされる。そのほか，市民の控訴権を定めたり，元老院議員をふやしたり，財務官 (クアエストル ) 職を設置したなどの功績があるとされているが，事実ではない。
