Prince Arisugawa Taruhito - Prince Arisugawa

A member of the imperial family during the late Edo and Meiji periods. The eldest son of Prince Arisugawa Takahito. Born on February 19, Tempō 6. Opposed the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between the United States and Japan and supported the Sonno Joi movement. In 1864 (Genji 1), he was appointed as an official in charge of national affairs, but was ordered to be placed under house arrest for siding with the Choshu samurai in the Hamaguri Gomon Incident (Kinmon Incident) that same year. In December 1867 (Keio 3), he assumed the position of president with the restoration of imperial rule. In the following year of 1868, during the Boshin War, he became commander-in-chief of the Eastern Expedition in February and led the imperial army eastward, entering Edo. He later served as Minister of War, Governor of Fukuoka Prefecture, and President of the Genroin (Senate), and served as the expeditionary commander-in-chief during the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877 (Meiji 10). After the war, he became an army general and successively held the posts of Minister of the Left, Chief of the General Staff, and Chief of the General Staff. He died on January 15, 1895, during the Sino-Japanese War.
