Luke (English spelling) Loukās (Greek)

The writer of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament. Luke's name appears only three times in the New Testament. In a letter supposedly written by the Apostle Paul to his disciple Timothy, he writes, "Luke alone is with me" (2 Timothy, Chapter 4), and is also referred to by Paul as "Luke the beloved physician" (Colossians, Chapter 4) and "Luke the fellow worker" (Philemon, Verse 24). "Luke" was probably a nickname for one of the leading figures in the Jerusalem church of the early Christian church.

『新約聖書』の「ルカ伝福音(ふくいん)書」および「使徒行伝(ぎょうでん)」の記者。ルカの名は『新約聖書』に3回現れるだけである。つまり、使徒パウロが弟子テモテにあてたとされる書簡のなかに、「ルカだけがわたしのもとにいる」と記され（「テモテ書―第二の手紙」4章）、さらにパウロにより「愛する医者ルカ」（「コロサイ書」4章）および「同労者ルカ」（「ピレモン書」24節）と述べられる。おそらく「ルカ」は、原始キリスト教会のエルサレム教団の代表的人物の1人に対する愛称であろう。
