...It has six petals, six stamens, and one pistil, but there are also double-flowered varieties. Most of the current horticultural varieties are bred from Tulipa gesneriana L. (English name: common garden tulip), native to Asia Minor. In addition, wild species such as Tulipa fosteriana Hoog., Tulipa greigii Regel, and Tulipa kaufmanniana Regel , as well as their hybrids, are used as horticultural varieties. It is said to have been imported to Japan during the Bunkyu era (1861-64), and commercial bulb production began around 1920 in Ogo Village, Niigata Prefecture (now Niitsu City).
