A religious city in central Iraq. The capital of Najaf Province. Officially called An-Najaf. Also called Al-Najaf and Meshed Ali. Located about 150 km south of Baghdad, near the middle Euphrates River. Population 309,010 (1987 census), 585,600 (2003 estimate). The city's origins date back to the 8th century, when the Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid enshrined the tomb of Ali, the first Imam of Shiite Islam. Along with Karbala, where the tomb of Ali's son Hussein is located, it is the most sacred pilgrimage site for Shiite Islam.
