In 1955, LW Cronkhite of the United States and WJ Canada of Canada reported this disease as a rare polyposis (a condition in which there are countless polyps), which is accompanied by gastrointestinal polyposis, hair loss, deformation or loss of nails, and brown discoloration of the skin. Countless polyps occur in the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine, but unlike other polyposis, it is not a tumor or inflammation. It is a rare disease of unknown cause. It does not occur in families and is more common in middle-aged and elderly people. It begins with loose stools and progresses to severe diarrhea, loss of appetite, and weight loss.

1955年にアメリカのクロンクハイトL.W.CronkhiteとカナダW.J.Canadaが珍しいポリポーシス(無数のポリープがある状態)として報告した，胃腸のポリポーシスと脱毛，つめの変形や脱落，皮膚の褐色変化を伴う疾患。ポリープは胃，小腸，大腸に無数に発生するが，他のポリポーシスとは明らかに異なって腫瘍でも炎症でもない。原因不明のまれな病気。家族発生はなく，中･高年者に多い。軟便に始まり，ひどい下痢，食欲不振，体重減少が進行する。
