Hooft - Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft

Dutch poet and playwright. A central figure in the Dutch Renaissance. Born into a merchant family, his father was mayor of Amsterdam. He traveled to Italy, then studied law in Leiden, and became a magistrate in the Muijderschaft district. He was a central figure in the famous group of artists known as the Muijderschaft Circle. As a humanist, he was devoted to the classical culture of Greece and Rome, and published a collection of elegant and erotic poems. He is famous for his plays, which follow the style of the tragic poet Seneca, including Granida (1605), which celebrates rural life and mocks the decadent aristocratic lifestyle, as well as Gerard van Velsen (1613) and Bateau (1626). After 1626, he devoted himself to prose. He also wrote historical novels, but his masterpiece Historia das Holland (1642) was left unfinished.
