A port town on Cape Cod Bay at the northern tip of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA. Early explorers such as B. Gosnold (1602) and H. Hudson (09) stopped here. In 1620, the Puritans landed here before settling in Plymouth, and the Mayflower Compact was signed on a ship anchored here. During the American War of Independence and the War of 1812, it was a blockade base for the British Navy. During the 19th century, it was a whaling base, and many Portuguese fishermen immigrated there. Many of their descendants still live here today. Population: 3,561 (1990).
