1747‐95 Russian fur trader and explorer. Also spelled Shelekhov. Since 1775, he made numerous voyages in search of furry animals (mainly sea otters and fur seals) living in the North Pacific and the Sea of Okhotsk. In 1783, together with Golikov, he set out on three ships for Alaska, and in August 1784, founded the first Russian colony in North America on Kodiak Island. Between 1790 and 1794, he participated in the founding of several fur companies, which were the basis for the founding of the Russian-American Company after his death.
