Also called atomic valence electrons. These are electrons that are involved in electron pair bonds with other electrons. In general, chemical bonds are formed by two elements donating one electron each to share, so the valence electrons of an atom must be isolated, unpaired electrons. Therefore, the number of valence electrons is equal to the atomic valence of the element.
