Hototogisu - Nightingale

A full-length novel by Tokutomi Roka. It was serialized in the Kokumin Shimbun newspaper from November 1898 (Meiji 31) to May of the following year. Published by Minyusha in January 1900. Namiko, the daughter of Army Lieutenant General Kataoka, married Navy Ensign Kawashima Takeo, but when she contracts tuberculosis, her mother-in-law O-Kei, fearing the family line would come to an end, divorces her while Takeo is away. The love between the two never fades, but with no way to save her, Namiko dies, lamenting that she will never be born a woman again. Based on the true story of General Oyama Iwao's daughter Nobuko, the novel is popular but calls out the weak position of women and indirectly denounces the families that prevent love. It was performed in the Shinpa school and became one of the best-sellers of the Meiji period. It is a representative domestic novel, but it also has a social scope, depicting merchants in collusion with soldiers in the background.

徳冨蘆花(とくとみろか)の長編小説。1898年（明治31）11月から翌年5月まで『国民新聞』に連載。1900年1月、民友社刊。片岡陸軍中将の娘浪子(なみこ)は、海軍少尉川島武男(たけお)と結婚したが、結核にかかり、家系の断絶を恐れる姑(しゅうとめ)のお慶(けい)によって武男の留守中に離縁される。2人の愛情はとだえなかったが、救われるすべのないまま、浪子は、もう女になんぞ生まれはしないと嘆いて死ぬ。大山巌(いわお)大将の娘信子の実話をモデルに、通俗的ながら女性の弱い立場を訴え、愛を阻む家を間接的に告発している。新派で上演され、明治期屈指のベストセラーとなり、家庭小説の代表作ではあるが、背後に、軍人と結託する商人が描かれており、社会的広がりもある。
