…It spread from its center in Celebes, Indonesia, in 1861, and epidemics are seen every year in various parts of Southeast Asia and Africa. The great cholera epidemic of 1858 is also called the Ansei Cholera, and is counted as one of the largest epidemics in the history of Japanese epidemics. As recorded by the Dutch physician Pompe in his Records of the Observations of a Stay in Japan, it was brought by the American ship Mississippi, which had arrived in Nagasaki. …
